The Draft That Made Revision Possible

A piece about the threshold between drafting and revising, and how long it took me to notice I'd crossed it. For anyone else mid-project.

For most of the last 18 months, I thought I was revising my novel.

I wasn't.

I was finishing my most satisfying draft.

I only just realized the difference, and I want to say something about that for anyone else mid-project who might be sitting in the same confusion.

Here's what I'd tell my earlier self if I could.

You're not behind. You're not slow. You're not failing to revise. You're doing the work that makes revision possible — which is a different kind of work, and one most craft books don't quite name.

A first novel doesn't usually arrive whole. It comes together. There's a stretch — sometimes long — where you're rewriting pages, and it feels like revision, but the book underneath is still finding itself. The thesis is still forming. The characters are still telling you who they are. You're working on a moving target, and you can't really revise a moving target. You can only keep writing until it stops moving.

The signal that the work has shifted isn't a finished page count. It's a quieter thing. The book starts telling you what it is. You can suddenly see it from the outside. The choices that felt arbitrary three months ago now feel inevitable. That's the moment drafting ends and revision becomes possible — not before.

So if you're 12 months in and not sure whether you're drafting or revising: you're probably drafting, and that's fine. The book will tell you when it's ready. Your job is to keep showing up until it does.

I spent 18 months getting to a starting line I didn't know I was running toward. I don't think that's naivety. I think that's how first novels actually get made.

The next four to seven months are revision.

The real kind.
